Random Images Now Define You

Almost ten years it has been
when in a flash you appear,
occasional random moments
in the oddest places.

I see white, a lily from the
garden that no longer grows
or the crisp hospital sheet
that covered your body,
so diminished and
betrayed.

Or at a beach I am back in
San Diego, our last trip,
laughing it seemed forever
after you slipped on the pier
in a warm rain.

Then, moments before break
of blue dawn in Paris walking
endlessly on the streets of
Bastille trying in vain to
find perfect croissants.

But it’s when a spotted dog
walks past me, it is 2001,
your hand is on a cage, her
paw on the other side,
and you smile and say …

She’s the one.
